A dozen local women participating in the conference "Rural women: New opportunities and challenges, held in Puerto Lumbreras " (15/10/2008)

Representatives of the Department of Women and Equal Opportunities of the City of Totana and various associations of women from the city attended the occasion of the commemoration of World Rural Women's Day to the "Rural Women: New Opportunities and Challenges" held in Puerto lights in the afternoon yesterday.

Totanera delegation attended this conference through the bus chartered by the Department of Women and Equal Opportunities, was represented by the various women's associations and in particular by the Association of Rural Women Raiguero.

This conference, organized by AFAMMER (Association of Families and Women in Rural) and the Institute of Women of the Region, was inaugurated by the President of the Autonomous Community of Murcia Ramón Luis Valcárcel, the Minister of Social Policy, Women and Immigration Bascuñana Joaquín García, and the mayor of Puerto Lumbreras, Pedro Antonio Sánchez López

From the Department of Women's Hall of Totana is informed and encouraged to involve all women's associations in the municipality.

The welcome ceremony was conducted by the director of the Institute for Women in the Region of Murcia, Teresa Moreno Gómez, Councilwoman Equal Puerto Lumbreras, Gázquez Catalina Lopez and President of AFAMMER Murcia, Carmen English English

The conference benefited from the intervention among others, Rosa Alcubilla Hernando, keynote speech focusing on small achievements and great goals of rural women, appointing women to open roads as Concepción Arenal, Emilia Pardo Bazán, Clara Campoamor, Loyola Palacio, Rigoberta Menchu, women who have broken new ground and fought to defend the rights of women.

To finish the day were presented survey data on the Status of Women in Rural Region of Murcia, from which extracted data as that of the 60,000 women in rural areas in the region, 32 percent are women.

One of the conclusions, according to reports from the Women's Department, was that many women show their dissatisfaction with their labor situation and call for new career opportunities, demonstrating the need for a generational change in attitudes and values, to claim their rights and thus greater gender equality.

Therefore, the change of the agricultural world passes through the changing role and position of women in it, as a necessary and indispensable to the advancement and development of rural areas, according to notes from the municipal department.
