Totana promote the campaign in September Clean Up the World "in the regional park of Sierra Espuña (30/07/2008)

The Councillor for the Environment, Trinidad Cayuela, presented a series of projects in his department works and will be developed from next September, aimed at enhancing ecological values, solidarity and respect for the environment, and that require volunteer participation.

One of them, under the slogan "Clean Up the World" is an environmental awareness campaign promoted by the United Nations will develop in more than one hundred countries, and in the Region of Murcia will carry out cleaning various areas of high ecological value because most municipalities have joined the Ministry of Sustainable Development and Spatial Planning in this environmental initiative.

In the municipality will take place on September 20 from 10:00 to 14:00, in the place of The Stables.

The mayor noted that volunteers provide the offset to the cleaning site, the material to conduct this work, a snack will be provided mid-morning and a certificate of participation in this activity.

The councilman said that volunteers interested in participating can register at the Department of Citizen Participation.

Another project is important for the recruitment of volunteers, as quoted by the mayor, is the day of the European Car Free Day to be held on 22 September.

Cayuela recalled that there are eight consecutive years in which the City Council endorses this initiative and work for that day to have volunteers to carry out sensitization and awareness work.

Finally, the municipal official referred to the Book Project, which will run from November with the aim of collecting the maximum amount of Spanish language books for donation to developing countries that lack resources to purchase educational materials and didactic.

The mayor insisted that "this project also the participation of volunteers is essential, is a fundamental because they are responsible for selecting, sorting and packing all those books that people donate."

The councilman explained that materials can be deposited collections, stories, books, encyclopedias, dictionaries, etc ..., that the neighbors may be delivered in the schools of the municipality, the municipal library card, the Senior Municipal Center, the Center Sociocultural "The Prison", City Hall, the Sports Pavilion "Manolo Ibáñez, Center for Adult Education and the Municipal Office Paretón.

The public may begin to make contributions from 15 September in the different designated point and then be transferred to the eco-park, where from November volunteers will be responsible for selecting material, grading and packaging, so that from February is sent to Peru and Nicaragua, where in April, the NGOs in the target countries are responsible for the distribution of material received.

As a significant fact, the mayor noted that in 2007 were collected in Totana 113 boxes of material, equivalent to 4.2 tons, while in the whole region were collected 56 tons.

Cayuela stressed that the project aims to "contribute to the progress of member countries and promote sustainable development through the reuse of these books and materials."

The mayor stressed the "vital role" of volunteerism for development of these projects and encouraged residents to take part in these initiatives.

Therefore, whoever wants to participate urged to register before September 5 at the Department of Citizen Participation.
