The neighbors of Totana show their devotion to Christ of Medina (09/03/2015)

Every year on the first Friday of March, we celebrate the Feast of Christ of Medina.

The name of this Christological invocation is due to the patronage they made since the seventeenth century the Dukes of Medina, the present Basilica Capuchina Jesus of Medina de Madrid.

Devotion to this Christ, is deeply rooted in Totana and, according to the chronicles, held since the arrival of the Capuchin Friars to our city, in the late nineteenth century.

The first Friday of March, this year the 06- day the Parish of the Three Hail Marys remains open all day, so that residents of Totana who wish to move to show their devotion to the image of Christ of Medina .

The Christ of Medina, also known as Our Father Jesus of Medinaceli-, is an image of Jesus of Nazareth that evokes the time of his Passion, when Pilate presents the people, on the first Good Friday in history.

Each year, the Chapel of Jesus Nazareno in which the image is located, is visited by hundreds and hundreds of neighbors of Totana passing to pray, to be entrusted to the image of the Nazarene, and to comply with the traditional rite of besapié.

The kiss the foot of the image, is not only a sign of devotion, but is the sign of the external manifestation of inner love that all Christians profess and feel for Jesus the Nazarene.

According to the centuries-old tradition totanera, before the image of Jesus of Medina, devotees pray three Creeds and express three wishes more need Jesus to grant them.

The doors of the church of the Three Hail Marys remained open from 07 am until 24 hours of the night, uninterrupted schedule and there were many neighbors who came to show their devotion.

The origin of devotion to Christ of Medina

The original image of Christ of Medina, is preserved in the Basilica of "Jesus of Medina" in Madrid.

This image dates from the first half of the seventeenth century and was commissioned by the Capuchin Fathers of Seville, which led to the Spanish colonies in North Africa.

In the summer of 1682, the image came to Madrid after being rescued by the Trinitarian Fathers, who managed to negotiate their "rescue", having fallen into the hands of Muslims.

The image scapular worn on the chest and back, evokes the action of the Trinity (red and blue cross on a white background).

That summer of 1682, was organized in Madrid the first procession with the statue of Christ Captive.

According to chronicles of the time, a procession attended said "everything Madrid", including the Royal House.

From that distant year, the first Friday of March, is repeated in Madrid this event, attended by thousands of devotees, including members of the Real- House, LF forming rows and expect long hours to meet for a few moments before the image of Jesus of Medina.
