The public library of the Social Center "Jail" takes the name "Matt Garcia" in homage to the first official chronicler of the City of Totana (28/02/2015)

The public library of the Center Sociocultural "Jail" of Totana has taken the name of the official chronicler, Matthew Garcia, fulfilling the plenary agreement last January, established unanimously.

During the ceremony, the mayor, Isabel Maria Sanchez Ruiz, stressed that Totana had a great debt to Mateo Garcia and, in part, is compensated with the appointment of this as important as the municipal library infrastructure.

From now on, as stated by the municipal councilor, this public space dedicated to education and culture of Totana, by which annually spend more than 15,000 users, remember the historical legacy that Matthew Garcia has left the city with its career and his passion for restoring and maintaining the living memory of the history of the town.

Sánchez Ruiz recalled that we have undertaken work on adapting and modernizing the municipal library, study hall (by passing over 3000 users per year) and the lobby of the first floor of the cultural center, as it was necessary adequate adaptation of this space for the thousands of users who use it do so in good condition.

Biography

Matthew Garcia was born on February 16, 1925 in the nearby town of Alhama de Murcia, but his life has been more intimately linked to Totana since his teens;

after his family moved to our town for work.

Since those years and to date, Mateo Garcia has worked tirelessly in the research, study and collection of historical documents related to the town of Totana.

It was a true student of local historical facts and authentic chronicler of our town, who have turned the City Council and other institutions and individuals seeking information and documents about events of our past as well as the biography of more varied characters of our past and present.

This long career and neat edition of interesting publications on historical, biographical, documentaries and images related to Totana studies.

he was awarded the appointment of official chronicler of the Loyal and Noble Ciudad de Totana after completion of the record, on the floor of September 12, 2000 and adopted son of the City, adopted at the Full Council of Totana 22 August 2008.

It has also purchased 64 monographs, 125 copies of magazines and donated to bibliographic a total of 654 books.

Furthermore, it has been a total of 9618 users loans, with 8558 books and 1060 player.

Also, there have been about 60 sessions to encourage reading with students from all centers with the participation of 1249 children.
