The Popular Party stands a motion in Parliament in June on finding solutions to the problem of food waste (21/06/2013)

Popular Group will present a motion to the full regular June so that the city of Totana Council urge the Government to create a specific campaign with the idea to make people aware that food waste is a global problem has negative effects on humans and the environment as well as economic consequences.

It also specifies that the city of Totana put in place all the campaigns and actions it deems appropriate to involve and educate different groups in the municipality in the problem of food waste (households, supermarkets, tourism, schools, businesses, local leaders , national and global)

The motion claims that from the municipal level should encourage and support initiatives such as Food Bank, Caritas or social dining services in this way can optimize the use of food and thus reaches the people who need it most.

The proposal states, the report GLOBAL FOOD WASTE AND FOOD LOSSES (losses and food waste in the world), commissioned by the FAO says that "about a third of the food produced in the world each year for human consumption is lost or wasted ", this means that each year about 1.3 billion tons wasted food.

The same FAO recognizes that almost 95% of losses and food waste recorded in developing countries are unintended losses that occur in the early stages of the food supply chain as a result of financial constraints, administrative and technical in procedures for collection, storage and cooling, as well as packaging systems and marketing.

In contrast, a third of the food that fail to consume in developed countries are wasted in the home.

Thus, in the developed world, the losses are much more significant at the end of the chain and are due to inefficient practices, the granting of undue importance to appearance, the confusion that labels with different dates, and that consumers do not hesitant to throw food safe.

The European Union is already studying the issue and has set the goal of halving food waste and virtually eliminate unsuitable landfills by 2020.
