The delegate of the Government in the Region of Murcia, Joaquin Bascuñana, attended this morning in Totana installing an accelerometer, an instrument that measures the seismic acceleration, and part of the new network of accelerographs deployed after an earthquake in Lorca May 2011 to monitor the seismic potential of the failure of Alhama de Murcia.
The Totana is part of the total of nine units included in this network and that will be installed progressively over the coming weeks.
These devices are essential not only for the detection and measurement of earthquakes, but to prevent them, as the transmission of real-time data via a satellite provides automatic calculations which provide, among other things, the epicenter, its depth, magnitude and time of event.
The nature of the accelerographs least its location determines the seismographs and have the key advantage to locate in urban environments.
Thus, the accelerometers to measure the force with which an earthquake affects a location, which is determined by the distance to the epicenter and the underlying terrain.
At the presentation ceremony, held in the City of Totana, Bascuñana was accompanied by its mayor, Isabel Maria Sanchez, and Moses Lazarus, director of the Department for the Promotion of Government Delegation in the Region of Murcia.
