Communiqué of the "Project Bastida-UAB" about the maintenance of the replica of the Argaric dwelling of La Bastida (23/03/2018)

Building the replica of an "Argaric House" was a commitment of the "Bastida-UAB Project" (Autonomous University of Barcelona) due to its double usefulness, scientific and tourist-cultural.

On the one hand, its didactic value complements the visit to the site and allows to better understand how people lived in the Bronze Age.

On the other hand, being a work of "experimental archeology" allows to know the peculiarities and difficulties involved in its construction and maintenance using prehistoric techniques and materials (stone, lime, earth, hurdle, esparto and wood).

The "Casa Argárica" is an example of prehistoric living science.

This pioneering methodology, tested in Hattusa, the Hittite capital, or in the Steinzeit experience, documented by the main German television (ARD), aims to unite knowledge and diffusion in an innovative way: in our case, to make known the prehistoric way of life with its own materials, as well as knowing the architectural knowledge of those people to adapt to the conditions of their environment.

Thus, when we speak of "replication" (and not of a mere copy) of a construction of 4,000 years ago, it is not excluded that incidents may arise due to the use of those materials and techniques.

These incidents allow identifying their causes to learn from them and adopt solutions.

All the minor incidents registered since its construction have been duly attended, as well as documented and studied.

This is how scientific experimentation works, and that is how the knowledge derived from it allows us to illustrate and enrich a dissemination of excellence.

We understand La Bastida as an archaeological park where knowledge is generated and quality content is disseminated;

never as a theme park where knowledge is banalized.

One of those minor incidents has been the leak that has received so much attention recently in the media.

That celebrity deserves, in the first place, that everyone knows the sequence of events:

(1) the leak was detected on March 6, 2018;

(2) was repaired on the 12th of the same month;

(3) Three days later, on the 15th, Juan José Cánovas, Councilor for Archaeological Sites of the City of Totana, denounced his existence before the weekly session of the Local Government Board;

(4) On March 21, almost ten days after being repaired, the same Councilman began a smear campaign in different media.

Report publicly this incident without checking if it has been solved and without consulting those who were responsible for the work, denotes that the Councilman seeks, before and above all, personal notoriety.

It is not the first time he tries, and we fear that it will not be the last.

Due to its nature as a museum and scientific resource, the "Argaric House" can provide more excuses in the future, despite the experience that the Councilman does not need them in his discredit campaign towards the "Bastida-UAB Project".

For reasons that we do not know, the Councilor of Archaeological Sites concentrates his personal energies and his political action in the discrediting of the "Project Bastida-UAB" so that he leaves Totana.

We deeply regret it and, at this moment, use the "Argaric House" for it.

We wish to emphasize that the "Argaric House" is an exemplary didactic and scientific resource, generated thanks to the collaboration between the City Council of Totana (conveying a grant from the Regional Government), the Autonomous University of Barcelona and the selfless and enthusiastic support of other people and entities.

Metaphorically, the "Argaric House" has been a place of welcome, learning and culture.

Despite the picturesque eviction attempts, the firm commitment of the "Bastida-UAB Project" is that it remains so.
