The Department of the Environment will manage the permits for the owners who must necessarily use the Vía Verde to access their farms (25/01/2018)

The Department of Environment of the City of Totana will manage the relevant permits and authorizations to owners who must necessarily use the infrastructure of the Greenway Cartagena-Totana to access their agricultural farms as it passes through the existing stretch in this municipality .

The councilor of the branch, Antonia Camacho, has informed that her department is going to identify the owners of the properties adjacent to the Greenway, in the stretch of land and not of asphalt that transits through this municipality, since the aim is to close it with pivots that avoid the generalized access of vehicles.

The mayor recalled that it has a use, with a marked ecotourism and sports, in which pedestrians and cyclists have an inexcusable relevance and preference in its use;

but it is necessary to preserve, in parallel, the interests of the owners of agricultural holdings that have no other alternative to access their properties than through said infrastructure.

Therefore, a procedure will be initiated that allows its exceptional use to the owners of farms close to it;

while those who have other alternative communication options must do so without using the greenway.

The councilor has recently visited, accompanied by municipal environmental technicians and the local police, some sections of this infrastructure as it passes through the municipality of Totana in order to know the existing reality.

In addition, during the visit, which also brought together responsible Vias Verdes Consortium of the Region of Murcia, they learned about the bridge that will be executed to avoid crossing the road RM-E11 (Mazarrón-Los Cánovas), in the municipal term of Fuente Álamo.

Tourist and sports claim

The new Greenway Totana-Cartagena, which has been designed by the Consortium of Greenways of the Region of Murcia entity that belongs to the Institute of Tourism, has already become during these first months, since its inauguration last summer, in a tourist claim and sports of the first order, and is an attraction for lovers of cycling and hiking in the region of Guadalentín and the Region.

The project of the Greenway Cartagena-Totana and the branch La Pinilla-Mazarrón have constituted a great axis of more than 60 kilometers for activities especially hiking and bicycle touring.

This contemplates the endowment of this route as ecotourism route that has been used for months as a playful option and respectful approach to the environment and as an itinerary of great ecological value and landscape integration, non-motorized among these populations.

The initiative has had a budget of 2.1 million euros, which have been financed entirely by Feder Funds and by the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia.

The layout was the result of an ambitious project of the beginning of the last century whose main objective was to unite the military bases of Cádiz and Cartagena;

and that in the case of the Region of Murcia it was in the modest intention to unite the region of Guadalentín with that of Campo de Cartagena and Mazarrón.

The initial execution envisaged the construction of the platform but the roads were never installed, with which it never became a railway;

and what has been tried now is to take advantage of said infrastructure, by means of the conditioning of said platform of the railway line for its use as a greenway.

The conditioning project joins the most significant nuclei of the Totana-Fuente Álamo (32 kilometers), Fuente Álamo-Cartagena (21 kilometers) and the La Pinilla-Mazarrón (13.8 kilometers) section;

and the works began at the beginning of last year 2016 and ending a few weeks ago.

In addition, it includes the restitution of the trace in those areas where it has been occupied, the improvement and improvement of the existing road for hiking and cycling and the construction of drainage works for its proper functioning and conservation.

It also includes signaling on all vertical and placement of protective elements for both the user (handrails) and to prevent the passage of vehicles and environmental recovery, with numerous plantations of native species for the creation of shaded areas and the habilitation of rest areas along the route (every 600 or 800 meters).

The road surface is by means of a single multifunctional treatment, through a stabilized gravel soil mixed with cement for use on foot, by bicycle and other equestrian activities or related to ecotourism.

The layout depends in large part on the Railway Infrastructure Administrator (ADIF) with which an agreement for the transfer of use was signed and the project is integrated into the National Greenways Program, coordinated by the Ferrocarriles Españoles Foundation under the Ministry of Transport. Promotion.

The project is an initiative of the Autonomous Community and it is integrated up to 15 Murcia municipalities through which the roads run, including the Totana.
