Neighbors of the Guadalentín region render accounts of the solidarity trip to Namibia and South Africa (20/09/2017)

On 11 September, the 11 residents of several municipalities in the Guadalentín region returned from Namibia via Cape Town, who have invested part of their vacation in a tourist and solidarity trip for Namibia and South Africa.

As reported by these citizens in a communiqué, with the help of numerous citizens, Puerto Lumbreras, Lorca, Totana and Alhama have been able to carry 350 kilos of humanitarian material to the arid lands of Namibia;

distributed in two communities of this distant country located between Angola and South Africa, and bathed by the Atlantic Ocean.

The first 190 kilos were delivered to the Mamadu Association, located in the suburb of Katatura, on the outskirts of Windohek, capital of Namibia.

Although the first impressions upon arriving in this country are, a development well above the rest of the countries of the black continent, soon, one leaves the tourist circuits and shopping centers and financial, the reality of extreme poverty, it strikes the feelings of the traveler.

This social center, located in a corner of this immense suburb, supports more than 80 children with social, economic, family and nutritional deficiencies;

It also offers support to widows and vulnerable women;

and finances for every 200 euros a year that the responsible person obtains, a scholarship so that the girls, who are the most disadvantaged, can go to a concerted center to holder in Secondary Education, since unfortunately the educational quality, of the public centers in this suburb are very deficient.

They also have sewing and handicraft workshops for women, as well as a school bus.

The 9 large suitcases contained, sewing utensils, children's clothes, school supplies and especially underwear, an express demand that Agnes, her promoter and director, made to these travelers a few months earlier.

The second delivery was about 160 kilos of blankets for a rural settlement in the center of the country.

In this country, with almost twice the size of Spain, only 2,500,000 inhabitants live, this reality, accompanied by the persistent drought that suffers most of Namibia and poor access to water, make life in the countryside be very hard and painful.

In the early 2000s, the Spanish Agency for International Cooperation, through the Embassy of our country in Namibia, financed the construction of a rural settlement for 50 families in the geographical center of the country.

This settlement was endowed with 50 decent housing, educational and health center and an efficient well of water.

It was through Ander, an official of our embassy in Windohek, who collected the demands of these families, and they were sent to these citizens who, with the support of the neighbors of some localities of Murcia, were able to provide more than 120 blankets, to a spot where night temperatures in the southern winter are about 2 degrees.

After their contribution of solidarity, the members of the group, as they could not be otherwise of the natural charms of this corner of Africa, visiting, Ethosa National Park, Skeleton Coast and the impressive Namib Desert.

From the signers of this news, we want to thank all those who have collaborated with the donation of the material contributed, as well as Bazar Manila and La Paloma Daughter, who turned to get the humanitarian material, which, these days enjoy in a far corner of Africa.
