The Local Police of Totana joins the special campaign of the DGT for the control of alcohol and drugs (01/06/2017)

The Local Police of Totana, in the framework of the collaboration with the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT), joins the special campaign on control of alcohol and drug presence in drivers to be held on 5 days to June 11, in compliance with the programming of the Campaigns and Surveillance and Control Operations for the year 2017.

The Local Police of Totana has emphasized the importance of the administrations' efforts and coordinated action in areas as relevant as road safety and the prevention of traffic accidents.

He also recalled the obligation to comply with regulations and that it is always better to act with responsibility to avoid accidents and damages that may become irreparable.

On the basis of the campaign, "alcohol is present as a concurrent or triggering factor in a third of fatal accidents," according to the DGT.

"Their presence in driving depending on their rate, multiplies between two and 15 the risk of an accident.

The only safe rate is 0.0 percent.

It is not only related to a higher accident rate, but also has a higher mortality, as it is a factor linked to a worse prognosis in the injuries suffered, "reports the DGT.

There has been a change in the behavior of citizens, which has made the percentage of positives detected drop dramatically in the last decade, from 5.1 to 1.6 per cent.

However, it is a priority objective of the DGT to try to achieve a reduction of 1% in breath tests in randomized controlled trials.

Driving after the use of psychoactive substances is a frequent occurrence in Spain, according to the information handled by the DGT.

Apart from alcohol, almost eleven percent of drivers drive after having consumed some substance - abuse drugs - that can affect the ability to safely drive.

Cannabis (THC) and cocaine are the two most frequently encountered substances.

Regardless of the effect on drivers, alcohol is also a risk for pedestrians, as a user of the road that shares the public space with others, mainly in urban areas, which makes the participation of all municipalities in the present Campaign is of extraordinary importance.

The DGT considers the participation of capital and city councils to be very important, since although citizenship awareness during driving has an upward trajectory, it is not the case with drugs and certain consumption habits persist in some sectors where they are registered Rates slightly higher than those recorded on long-distance routes.
