The Mayor's Office raises a motion of solidarity with the farmers affected by the polar cold season (25/01/2017)

The mayor of Totana, Juan José Cánovas, has raised a motion to the January plenary session so that the City Council can show solidarity with the farmers of Totana's artichokes, broccoli or lettuce affected by the frost and the parreros whose plantations were demolished by the weight of Snow and wind, as well as affected flower greenhouses.

In the motion, the Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Environment is urged to expedite the assessment and scope of damages, approving direct aid to those affected.

In addition, the proposal calls for an extraordinary line of aid to the City of Totana to repair roads and agricultural infrastructure damaged by the rains and snow storm in recent weeks.

According to the motion, the rainstorm that suffered the Region of Murcia at the end of December last year, along with the polar cold wave that struck the totanero field last week, have caused considerable damage in agriculture, Totana being one of The zones of the Region where the ravages of the fallen snow have suffered with more virulence.

The snowfall of the last week may mean medium and long-term benefits over our municipality, such as the recovery of the Sierra Espunna Natural Area, the recharge of aquifers or the relief of irrigation in agriculture.

But in this case, there is the painful face of the back of the coin: More than 70 hectares of table grape grapes on the ground, some greenhouse cut in El Raiguero overturned by the weight of snow, frost on vegetables such as artichoke , Broccoli or lettuce, to which are added the deterioration of rural roads;

Some patched by the City before the rains.

The damages caused were, mainly, structural causing serious damages in greenhouses, parrales and rural roads.

The most relevant problems in the area have been the fall of structures of parrales by the collapse of the meshes and structures by the heavy weight of the snow.

This emergency situation on a sector so important for the totanera economy requires an immediate response from the institutions to mitigate the serious damages that have occurred in the structures of the parrales, located mostly in the hamlet of El Raiguero, which have no repairs and Should be planted and reassembled as well as the loss or deterioration of several cuts of artichokes, broccoli or lettuce that is estimated until May may not be producing normally.

The mayor, in addition to visiting the areas most affected on the first day, accompanied the Minister of Agriculture in contact with affected parraleros and is aware of the visit of regional deputies who have been interested in the serious problem.

The OCAS is assessing the new losses, although losses can be around 2.5 million euros in the Region and a loss of about 100 jobs is expected.

Due to the difficulty and the very high cost of insurance of these facilities due to their high risk, many farmers had no greenhouse insurance, so many families have been ruined.

As I said in the motion, I believe that the Town Hall Plenary should show solidarity with the affected farmers and support them in everything we need from our possibilities, urging the Ministry and the Ministry to speed up the assessment of damages and articulate direct aid to help To mitigate the heavy losses in the structures of parrales and greenhouses and in the harvest of vegetables affected by the ice.

For the economic recovery of the field it would be convenient to face the recovery of the facilities, the implementation of a special line of soft credits for the affected and a study to arbitrate the mechanisms for the implementation of insurance of protection of specific damages in The agricultural facilities.
