More than thirty volunteer students from the IES Prado Mayor "and" Juan de la Cierva "participate in an innovative experience (26/06/2010)

More than thirty high school students from IES Prado Mayor "and" Juan de la Cierva "participate in the coming days from June 28 to July 9 in an innovative experiment involving the excavation and research in the Field of the Argárica Canvas Strip, located in Sports City "Espuña."

The presentation ceremony of this innovative project pioneered the Murcia Region, attended the Mayor of Totana, José Martínez Andreo, Councilmembers Citizen Participation, Juan Carrion, Culture and Tourism, Ana Belén García, Professor of History and Geography and codirector of the project, José Antonio González Guerao, and the company representative Brothers Palomares, Francisco López Gómez, respectively.

This broad experience, with the support and cooperation of the Directorate General of Fine Arts and Cultural Assets of the Region of Murcia, born under the coordination of the group of professionals currently working within the project "La Bastida", directed by Professor of Prehistory at the Autonomous University of Barcelona, Vicente Llul as noted Guerao, aims to bring archeology to society in general, especially to these young students, through active participation in the various fields of study of archeology in which it moves.

Specifically, in this case, and in innovative ways, it is intended that the students know and appreciate other disciplines and professions whose activities are also related to archeology, so they can guide their future career to some of these branches of working life such as computer science, surveying, restoration, and archeology, among others.

In this way, students will attempt to develop a spirit of research and scientific knowledge through the use of precision instruments and high technology, distinguishing between different types of media used in archaeological research in order to consider the importance of multidisciplinarity in any research process.

The primary objective of this project is to conduct the research work of excavation at the site of the canvas strip in order to assess their condition and make a first assessment of the information that can contribute to the knowledge of prehistory suereste the mainland in general and in particular Argar Culture.

Project Phases

The project consists of three phases of which have already taken the two initials.

In the first place, have conducted talks on the work that is being developed at La Bastide in schools in the municipality.

The second phase consists of a first approach to working with Auxiliary Sciences Archeology, where students may have known in two practice sessions the working methods of different disciplines such as surveying, computer applications in anthropology, restoration, drawing technical and anthropology.

The third phase, which involves participation in archaeological excavation, is the implementation of the knowledge acquired in earlier stages.

This project, supported by the Directorate General of Fine Arts and Cultural Assets of the Region of Murcia, it has been possible thanks to the collaboration of different companies and institutions in the locality and the building company Palomares Brothers, the owner of the land in which is located on site and has provided much of the infrastructure to carry out the work and the selfless Martínez Bus Company, which has facilitated the movement of students and faculty leadership and Geography and history of the two institutes.

The City Council of Totana, through the Department of Education, Culture and Tourism and the Department of Citizenship to provide the transfer of material (tents) to be installed in the place in which to develop the project over the days duration, will assume coverage of the costs of liability insurance, accident and sickness will be hired for each of the 33 student volunteers of the project, amounting to the amount of 112.20 euros, and to facilitate participation the students involved in the project activities organized leisure time from the different municipal areas.

For his part, Mayor of Totana, highlighted the innovative spirit of this great project that has been carried out thanks to the teamwork of the different municipal areas, and seeks to foster in students a spirit of inquiry and knowledge through scientific precision instruments and high technology and will identify the essential features of the first historical civilizations and the main features of the natural landscape.
