Important winter storm in the eastern half of the peninsula between Sunday and Wednesday (17/01/2020)

After an anticyclonic start of the year, the weather will change radically from Sunday.

The northward movement of the anticyclone will drag cold air in height towards Spain, causing the formation of a DANA or “cold drop†on the south of our country.

In parallel, the formation of the “Gloria†storm over Ibiza will inject surface winds of maritime origin against the Spanish Mediterranean facade.

The combination of all these factors will cause us to have abundant rainfall in large areas in the form of rain or snow in abundant form and strong winds and waves.

Rainfall will be intense in the Valencian Community and Catalonia, and snow may fall near sea level in Catalonia.

FORECAST FOR THE REGION OF MURCIA

Within the uncertainty that always accompanies these situations, the situation is likely to develop as follows:

Tomorrow SATURDAY we will have cloudy skies in the Region and some very weak rain may occur.

Most notable will be the notable decrease in maximum temperatures.

SUNDAY will increase cloudiness and precipitation will fall in the afternoon, extending from the northeast of the Region to the rest.

The snow level will go down and at the end of the day it can snow above just 400 or 500 m of altitude.

As the “Glory†storm will move from Ibiza to the Cabo de Gata bordering on the heights of Murcia, it is likely that the wind is strong or very strong at the end of the day.

MONDAY will be the most unstable day, with widespread and persistent rainfall, with temporary improvements.

The snow level will remain very low during the first half of the day, rising to 800 m later.

The wind will be strong or very strong during the first half of the day and the maximum temperatures will drop significantly.

It will be a very cold day.

On TUESDAY we will have rain and snow during the first half of the day, but as temperatures will rise a bit, so will the snow level.

In the afternoon rainfall will be more dispersed.

WEDNESDAY will be a variable day, with weak and scattered rainfall.

Temperatures will continue to rise slightly and so will the snow level.

The precipitations will be abundant, being able to surpass the 50 mm in many points during all the episode.

In principle, snow is not expected in the headwaters of the Region, except in Yecla, Jumilla, Moratalla, Caravaca, Cehegín and Bullas.

A lot of attention to travel through these municipalities and other mountain areas, especially Sunday night and Monday.

It is likely that everything that precipitates during the episode is snow above 1,000 m altitude.

Between 400 and 1,000 m of altitude, sometimes it will be snow and other rain.

The snow on the tops of Sierra Espuña promises to be spectacular, as well as in all the mountains located in the Altiplano, the Northwest and north of Lorca.

Special caution also with wind and waves, as they will be very intense between Sunday and Monday.

The temperatures will stand out by cold especially during the day (Monday and Tuesday), since at night, due to wind and cloudiness, frosts will not occur, except in high areas.

Stay tuned for the next updates, where we will also comment on the weather warnings that are activated and follow the evolution of the possible changes in the amount of precipitation and the snow level.
