The Department of Sports reports that last Saturday, December 21, the Christmas hiking activity organized by the City of Totana was celebrated, with the collaboration as guide of Antonio Martínez Cano, retired Professor of Natural Sciences of the IES Juan de la Cierva and trail technician of the Mountaineering Federation of the Region of Murcia (FMRM), and that passed through the dam of Paretón and nearby.

A total of 17 people, 11 adults and 6 children, left the "Manolo Ibáñez" Sports Pavilion at 8.30 am to go to El Paretón, as the route began around 9 am under the highway bridge near the Guadalentín river.

The first section of the route was developed along the riverbed, between the small Tarays forest that houses the riverbed.

The participants were getting to know some of the plants that develop in it, they could also observe numerous rabbits that crossed the road and even a fox that left the channel a few meters from the participants.

They could also appreciate the different fossils that appear in the rocks used for the construction of the bridge over the river of the old regional road of Paretón.

Already in the dam, they were able to know their history and modifications suffered in recent years.

After a short break to regain strength, they went down to the bypass channel and made a small section through it, to leave it at the first crossroads and take the one that runs along the Fontanilla ditch, which was used for irrigation in the past, and although it is currently in disuse, you can still see the "interiors" used to regulate the amount of water that was derived in the different branches of it.

This section was also very interesting for the kids since they could see some frogs in the current irrigation canals and several “ducks� in some of the irrigation rafts, and they even saw a raptor that was hunting in the river area .

At about 12.30 pm the activity ended at the same point where it had started, returning the participants to Totana on the bus used for travel.
