The Corvette Captain, the totanero Diego Cánovas Cánovas, attends the visit of HM King Felipe VI at the Headquarters within the Atalanta Operation of the European Union in Somalia (11/12/2019)

He has played numerous destinations on board corvettes, cazaminas, frigates, aircraft carriers and finally on board the scientific vessel "Castor", after graduating in the specialty of Hydrography.

He has also played destinations abroad, at the NATO maritime command, in London, and participated in the first Persian Gulf war, for which he was awarded the Kuwait Liberation Medal.

He is currently the head of the joint operations center of the strategic level headquarters of the ATALANTA operation of the European Union for the Western Indian Ocean and is in charge of interagency relations.

He studied English philology, is a master's degree in "Peace, Security and Defense" and performs his doctoral thesis on international security on maritime safety in Africa.

He has published diverse articles.

He is married and has three children.

Diego Cánovas, who happens to be the younger brother of the current mayor of Totana, proudly boasts his status as a totanero, with deep respect for his elders who worked the land of Totana honestly.

In 2009, the European Union launched the ATALANTA operation, with a headquarters of the operation at a strategic level and a staff on board ships deployed in the Western Indian Ocean.

The EU mandate for the ATALANTA operation focuses on combating piracy and theft at sea on the shores of Somalia, protecting ships of the World Food Program, monitoring fishing activity in the region and supporting others EU missions as well as international organizations.

As a result of Brexit, after accepting the Spanish offer to assume the strategic command of the operation, last year the Council of the European Union decided to transfer the headquarters from Northwood (United Kingdom) to Rota (Spain).

The fact that a Spanish general officer plays the strategic command of a multinational operation is a milestone in the last two centuries.

Currently, the commander of the operation is the Marine Corps General D. Antonio Planells Palao.

The headquarters is multinational and consists of members of the States of the European Union, as well as other countries such as Serbia.

On November 29, HM King Felipe VI made a visit to the headquarters of the ATALANTA operation during which he was offered a presentation of the operation, including the last pirate attack on April 21.

This attack involved a Spanish tuna boat, from Bermeo, and another Korean tuna boat with a Spanish crew, in addition to a Yemeni fishing vessel previously hijacked and used as a mothership by pirates.

The decisive action of the Spanish frigate "Navarra" and its on-board special operations team frustrated the attack, and ended with the liberation of the mother ship's crew and the arrest of five suspects, who are being tried in Seychelles.

During the visit, the totanero Captain of Corbeta Diego Cánovas Cánovas exposed to SM the king the operation of the operations center as well as the current state of the operation and the relations with the world sector of maritime transport, of vital importance for the well-being of the humanity, given that around 90% of the goods are transported by seas and oceans.

The king expressed the pride of Spain for hosting the headquarters in his territory and holding the strategic command of the operation, and congratulated us for having made a transfer from Northwood (United Kingdom) to Rota (Spain) smoothly on March 29 .

Just 30 days later, he reacted successfully to a pirate attack.
