The Totana Local Police will carry out, from September 16 to 22, a surveillance and control campaign on distractions at the wheel (09/09/2019)

The Local Police of Totana will carry out, from September 16 to 22, a new prevention and surveillance campaign, in this case, on control over distractions at the wheel;

adhering to the one promoted by the Directorate General of Traffic (DGT).

In this case, during the aforementioned week special attention will be paid to distractions at the wheel, which are one of the main causes of traffic accidents.

In 2018, distraction appears as one of the main causes of fatal accidents in the Region of Murcia.

Dialing a mobile phone number, answering a phone call, reading or answering a "Whatsapp", manipulating the browser or using social networks, means looking away from the road for a period of time, during which the vehicle runs without control and circumstances that cause a serious accident may arise.

After a minute and a half of talking on the mobile, even with hands-free, the driver does not perceive 40% of the signals, their average speed drops by 12%, the heart rate accelerates sharply during the call and it takes longer to react .

The danger of improper use of the mobile phone can become comparable to driving with excess alcohol.

A driver who speaks while driving loses the ability to maintain a constant speed, does not keep sufficient safety distance with the vehicle in front and the reaction time increases considerably, specifically between half to two seconds, depending on the reflections of each driver.

Sleep and fatigue are two important causes of road accidents, very present in those accidents that occur due to collisions by reach, exits of the road or invasions of the opposite lane.

Driving with sleep or fatigue implies an increase in the number of distractions behind the wheel, altered ability to make decisions, increased reaction time to traffic events and decreased ability to pay due attention to the environment.
