Totana continues to increase each year the habits of selective separation at source and, therefore, the volumes of recyclable waste from both containers and paperboard in clean spots distributed in different areas of the urban area and the rural areas of the municipality.

During 2018, a total of 247,140 kilograms of containers and 531,420 kilograms of paper-cardboard (recycling points and door-to-door service) were counted;

what supposes an ostensible increase with respect to the figures of the year 2017, that were of 227,800 kilograms of containers and 478,918 kilograms of paper-cardboard.

In addition, the collection of a total of 12,615.2 tons of organic waste was recorded during this year;

49,560 kilograms from road cleaning;

613,220 kilograms of glass containers, 58,009 kilograms of clothing, footwear and toys;

and 5,040 liters of domestic oils

The growth of waste in the points is progressive, given that in 2016, 219,740 kilograms of cardboard-paper and 418,452 cardboard paper were collected, due to the increase in more spaces and greater public awareness.

The City Council has been developing citizen awareness actions for years to promote the culture of recycling by separating light packaging and cardboard paper at the origin, which is carried out with the collaboration of Ecoembes, promoting public awareness activities on the selective separation of waste.

These campaigns are intended to show the benefits of recycling the waste that is deposited in the yellow container, in this case, cans, plastic containers and briks, both in the protection of air quality and in the care of the environment ambient.

In addition, the correct separation of the containers in the clean points for subsequent recycling is taught and a positive and critical attitude is encouraged that leads to the decrease in the generation of waste, transmitting the importance of a responsible consumption of environmental resources and adopting sustainable behaviors and habits.

These actions are linked to a contest that serves to give participating citizens a prize in reward for the effort they make from their homes by separating this waste (plastic containers, cans, briks, cardboard, paper, newspapers, magazines, etc.) for their subsequent deposit in the corresponding container.
