Today, April 3, is the 40th anniversary of democratic city councils.
It was that day of the year 1979, when Spain and the then province of Murcia faced their first municipal elections of democracy.
The municipality of Totana had a population of 18,072 residents and neighbors;
and a census of 12,429 voters.
That day exercised its right to vote 79.32%, something above the regional average in this election call.
The first municipal Corporation, which took office on April 19, 1979 until 1983, was formed by 17 corporations and was chaired by Antonio Pérez Férez (PSOE 1979-1987).
Eight councilors of the PSOE, 8 of UCD and 1 of the PCE were elected.
The first appointed democratic councilors were together with the mayor Pérez Férez, Pedro José Fernández Cabrera (PSOE), Bernardino Cánovas Martínez (PSOE), Alfonso Navarro Martínez (PSOE), Josefa Morales Ruiz (PSOE), Diego Tudela Moreno (PSOE), Hilario Campos Martínez (PSOE), Pedro Sánchez Hernández (PSOE), Antonio Jiménez Travel (UCD), Manuel Moreno Moreno (UCD), Manuel Victoria Conesa (UCD), José Ruiz Vidal (UDC), Rodolfo García Martínez (UCD), Pedro Marín Ayala (UCD), Pedro José Molina Martínez (UCD), José Serrano Pastor (UCD) and Ginés Carreño (PCE).
Later, Víctor Cabrera Tudela and Isidora Guarinos Martínez, both from the PSOE, joined to replace two councilors who resigned their minutes in 1980 and 1982, respectively, for professional or personal reasons.
