The Mayor, Andrés García, and the Councilor for Sports, Isabel María Molino, today made an institutional recognition, representing the Municipal Corporation, Totanero tennis player, Pedro Cánovas, recent senior European champion +35 clubs, with the Murcia Club of Tennis.
In this tournament more than 300 tennis players from sixteen nationalities and some 50 sports clubs have gathered.
In this Championship the national champions of each country participate and the Murcia CT participated in this tournament as the Spanish champion of the year 2018, a title that he conquered last April, defeating CT Zaragoza in the final.
The Murcian team defeated the English champion, the Warwick Boat Club, by 5-0;
after the Liepaja Club of Latvia 3-2;
and in the final to the Dutch team of TV Dijkzicht, by a tight 3-2.
In the three rounds, the totanero player played an important role as he won all of his matches, the most important being the decisive doubles in the final, in which he paired with Juan Antonio Marín, and with the score of the tie tied at 2 , won by a convincing 6-1, 6-1;
getting the European title traveled to lands Murcia.
In addition to the totanero player the Murcian team was formed by Antonio Alcaraz, Juan Antonio Marín, José Morga and as captain Florencio Soto.
It is the second time that this same team has reached the final of the European Championship, since three years ago participating as guests of the organization, they managed to reach the final by losing 3-2 against the Turkish team of Yesilyurt Spor Kulübü.
A great success for these players who already achieved the second place in Spain last year and who this year have been able to make history with the Murcia Tennis Club winning the Spanish and European Championships, something that no club had ever achieved in the Region of Murcia.
At present, Pedro Cánovas performs his training work as a monitor at the Totana Tennis Club, where he has been working for 16 years.
The municipal authorities highlighted this sporting achievement and stressed that it is "a privilege for totanero sport" to have athletes who obtain these elite sporting successes;
at the time they congratulated and encouraged him to be "a reference" for children who start in this discipline.
Pedro Cánovas thanked the City Council's institutional gesture and said that "it is a source of pride that in your town they give you this recognition, which is a reward for their work for so many years";
and made a balance of how is the tennis academy in Totana and the Region of Murcia, in general, especially after the success of the Murcian Carlos Alcaraz, champion of the Junior Davis Cup with the Spanish U-16 team.
