The City of Totana has requested the Directorate General for the Environment of the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment of the Region of Murcia the installation of a Mobile Unit of the Atmospheric Surveillance Network, which systematically assesses the quality of the air in this municipality, according to the councilor of the branch, Antonia Camacho.
Precisely, the plenary of Totana and gave green light several months ago to an initiative of the Department of Environment in order to install such device in this municipality in order to control air pollution in application of European directives for various pollutants subject to evaluation in the air, for the purposes of emissions.
This initiative is proposed with the aim of establishing, in the future, municipal guidelines for action in the field of atmosphere in order to avoid, prevent and reduce the possible annoying or harmful effects on the health of people and the environment related to the state of the air quality in Totana.
The Region has a surveillance network with eight fixed stations (Murcia, Cartagena, Lorca, Alcantarilla and Caravaca de la Cruz) and two mobile units. These facilities automatically measure pollutants such as ozone, nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide, particles, benzene , toluene and xylene, among others;
as well as meteorological factors such as temperature, humidity and wind direction, among others.
The City Council has developed in recent years guidelines on the atmosphere, joining in March 2005 the "Spanish Network of Cities for Climate" that promotes sustainable development policies and the promotion of local policies to combat climate change that contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and compliance with the Kyoto Protocol.
In addition, the totanero Consistory approved in March 2011 its adhesion, also, to the Covenant of Mayors, an initiative of the European Commission in which cities assume the formal commitment to reduce CO2 emissions by 20% in 2020.
