This is a pioneering initiative in the Region of Murcia, explained the mayor, and that comes through a collaboration agreement between the Ministry of Education, Training and Employment and the city of Totana, which "has opted for the second consecutive year innovative educational resource launched in the town. The occupational class, which is an organizational measure education promotion special that takes place in the stage of compulsory secondary education, has the duration of a school year, ending June 20 this year.
Through occupational classroom, students have received pre-service training, basic practical training, personal development classes and activities, as reported by the mayor, who welcomed the progress made not only in education but academic personal and social.
Also, Cayuela welcomed this project as a whole, both the students and their families, had positively evaluated the occupational class, since it is an educational alternative that aims to return students to the education system through a professional induction program or curricular diversification program, he explained, who reported that of the fifteen students, eight will continue with this type of training activities.
According to the mayor, and taking into account the characteristics of students, since they had abandoned or put up an intense chronic truancy during the past school year, "the results have been satisfactory and we support the continuation of occupational class, whereas is the best resource for these students. Finally, he thanked the Ministry of Education, Service to Diversity, collaboration and resources toward the implementation of this educational initiative, and the management team of the IES Juan de la Cierva and encouraged students continue their education in the professional field in order to gain access in the future, to jobs and decent work.
In turn, the mayor recalled that during this academic year 2008/09, has also developed a training program aimed at parents of participating students, through the Municipal Service psychologist Prevention and Control of School Absenteeism, by virtue a grant from the Regional Employment Service and Training, through which labor costs have been borne by psychologist hired.
This training for parents, which took place in the Old Secondary School, has been doing during the first Thursday of each month, and has had a lasting approximately one hour per session, ranging from February to June.
Throughout the training talks have focused on topics such as the importance of parental involvement in school, the difficulties of these young students, parenting styles, communication with our children, among other issues related to youth and their families.
The aim of this course for parents has been to meet and fluid channels of communication with families, raise awareness of the importance of education and encourage their participation in regard to the education of their children.
It has also tried to give parents of these students the skills and knowledge to enable them to lead a family life more positive and enriching.
The assessment had been made by parents attending these talks has been very positive because, they say, the talks have responded to their interests.
Most of them consider the issues raised during the same apply to reality and helped to broaden their knowledge on certain issues, while helping them try to resolve any disputes they may have with their adolescent children differently to how they could have done before.
