Plan for Prevention and Control Municipal Truancy (19/08/2008)

The Councillor for Education, Roque Molina Legaz, made a very positive assessment on the work of the Municipal Plan for Prevention and Control of School Absenteeism, where there have been a total of 168 cases operated during the 2007-2008 school year.

In this regard, reported that this service has attended during the past school year 2007/08 for a total of 168 truancy cases referred from different schools in the municipality.

Of the total cases treated, 21 are children, 71 primary and 77 secondary schools.

In kindergarten there is a 1.66% of school absenteeism in primary 3.56% and 6.16% compulsory secondary one, with the overall rate of truancy in the town of Totana 3.73%.

In terms of ethnicity of the students referred to the Municipal Service Absenteeism, the mayor noted that the total of 168 cases referred, 77 (41.66%) cases were indigenous, natives of the municipality of Totana, 52 Roma (30, 95%), 33 of South American nationality (19.25%) and the rest of the students belong to nationalities Moroccan, Portuguese, Pakistani, English and French.

From the results obtained by partner and family interventions conducted with students and their families are derived data and that 60% of truancy cases has improved, decreasing the number of truancy and improve attendance reaching.

Moreover, 14.28% remained at the same rate, corresponding mainly to high school students.

In this regard, Legaz Molina said "it is vital that schools intervene immediately when you detect a spot in the classroom absenteeism, leading quickly to the Truancy Service to establish a plan of action."

Finally, a 13.69% have left the service at age 16, the end of compulsory schooling, students who have been derived from the various existing programs and labor training programs such as Initial Professional Qualification , the Trade School and other employment resources and job banks.

The rest of the students referred to the appropriate service to other situations.

From these data, according to the mayor, shows the importance of developing specific programs that meet the needs presented by different groups with which we have worked, with the goal of reducing absenteeism in certain sectors of the population.

At the same time, the Councillor for Education has expressed its satisfaction with the results obtained not only through the intervention undertaken with disaffected students, but also by the additional steps that have been developed over the course from the Service Prevention and Control Municipal Truancy, these being the launch of the campaign to collect educational material "Sharpen your school supplies, which has enjoyed significant success, providing the service of a bank of textbooks and school supplies in perfect condition to be offered to families with low income.

On the one hand, the mayor of the sector has highlighted the enormous participation of primary and secondary students in the contest "creates the pet against truancy" and "creates the advertisement against truancy", held during the months of April May.
