Social education project for children in situations of exclusion (24/07/2008)

The Collective for Social Promotion "The Candle" as a method to achieve the objective of promoting and facilitating the development of the individual in all its facets, especially those found in some social disadvantage, launched, 11 years ago, in collaboration with the Department of Education of the City of Totana, the project "Promoting Education for children and young people in social disadvantage."

This project, which can be considered the flagship of the collective activity, aims to achieve an improvement in the educational development and training of / the children and youth in the municipality that social difficulties added to their adaptation and school development, trying to motivate to young people to study, through the creation of a series of guidelines and good habits, involving in the process of strengthening a large number of volunteers (mostly university students) who come to become the ideal reference of minors, and also having the invaluable collaboration of schools and involvement in the process of the child's family.

To get higher quality care to all people who need to use this resource, the project has been divided into two types of intervention: first develop individualized educational support tasks in the home of the child and on the other side 6 classrooms have adequate educational support group, located in different neighborhoods and schools.

For the actions undertaken during the year 2008 we can refer to data as positive as they have been 36 children of primary and 10 secondary school students who have benefited from an individualized educational support in their own homes.

With respect to children who have attended regularly for six months to school group have been a total of 165, with the collaboration of more than 40 volunteers and 6 socio-educational professionals directly involved in the development of project.

In addition to the quantitative data provided above, is to be noted that according to assessments from schools, they belong to the participants in this project has succeeded in improving the educational level of children, showing positive results such as a greater family involvement in education of children, increasing the time spent doing homework, better results in the final grades, etc..

Since the schools in the borough has received a response and overwhelming involvement in the project, highlighting the importance that from the teaching staff and management is given to this resource, which will undoubtedly complement the educational in those cases that need it most.

Also noteworthy was the support shown and coordinated with the municipal technicians in the area of education, specifically the plan responsible for truancy prevention, technical and other related areas such as social services and children and youth.

Since these lines would like to thank all stakeholders listed above, which are involved in the development of social initiatives, such as the present one, and allow them to see the light and considered with the importance they actually have.

Finally, it should emphasize the great sensitivity shown by the public authorities, namely the Department of Education of the City of Totana, in situations of social problems and school difficulties of its youngest citizens.
