Totana municipal library has joined the project "Libraries for everyone.

All equal before the culture, "a pilot project launched by the Directorate General for Books, Archives and Libraries in conjunction with the Directorate General of Immigration and volunteering and other groups of the Ministry of Labour and Social Policy, which is being developed through Regional Library, which is aimed at the foreign population.

Thus, the councilman of Culture, Ana Belén García, and the project coordinator of the Association Columbares Almagro Antonio Soto, accompanied by a responsible municipal library, Maria José Sets and intercultural mediator, presented this initiative, intended as a "cross-cultural encounter."

The mayor said that "Library for All" focuses on integration and multiculturalism, and is included as one of the "Plan for Social Integration of Immigrants in the Region of Murcia 2006-2009."

This project aims to adapt the regional library services to Murcia and the rest of the Network of Public Libraries to ethnic, linguistic and cultural differences existing in the locality.

Therefore, the Municipal Library of Totana has been selected, taking into account the high number of immigrants and foreigners resident in the municipality.

Currently have service with the Regional Library municipalities of Torre Pacheco, Los Alcazares, San Javier, Fuente Alamo, Mazarrón and Totana, who have intercultural mediators.

Since the municipal library provide various services such as support for librarians, by hiring an intercultural mediator, Boicha Liman, who speaks three languages, the development of intercultural awareness and activities to encourage reading and the acquisition of library collections in different languages.

The program will develop multilingual materials and resources for language learning and shall mark "intercultural" by a distinctive logo so that immigrants locate resources, among other things.

For its part, the project coordinator, welcomed the cooperation extended by the local Town Hall and stressed the benefits "enriching" of this project, through which "multiculturalism is normalized in our society, within an institution dedicated to progress through of culture such as libraries. "

Also, the intercultural mediator encouraged all foreigners residing in the town to use such resources will be available in the municipal library.

Finally, the Councillor for Culture thanked the Ministry of Culture and the General Directorate of Books, Archives and Libraries and to all entities involved to have had Totana for membership to this project.
