The City Council shows its support Totana consistory of Aledo and solidarity with the Agricultural Transformation Societies (14/07/2012)

Totana City Council has shown its institutional support to the Consistory of Aledo and the various Agricultural Transformation Societies affected area in its negotiations with the Segura basin (CHS) to alleviate the emergency situation of water deficit affecting farmers many table grape crops in both municipalities and Espuña.

Councilman Agriculture and Water, Diego Munoz, has announced plans to raise a motion at July regular full solidarity with the demands being made by the City of Aledo in this regard, and agrarian societies involved.

As explained by the mayor, Totana is a term where the primary sector is undoubtedly the economic engine of this county and the cultivation of grapes, among others, is one of the main products which are devoted some areas of production in higher areas of the municipality, on the border with the neighboring city of Aledo, and within the Regional Park of Sierra Espuña.

Totana has many sites dedicated to the cultivation of table grapes for its excellent topography and climate, and the modernization of irrigation systems have been a mainstay that has enabled increased performance and expertise of farmers in the area.

The good qualities of this table grapes are the result of the microclimate that occurs in the ecosystem of the Bajo Guadalentín, especially in areas of the municipalities of Aledo, Alhama de Murcia and Totana, where you get full Dominga grape production .

The extraction of groundwater, has enabled Aledo is one of the largest producers of table grapes, but a significant number of owners are residents of Totana, as the municipality does not have endowments or desalination shipping as far as the Irrigation water is concerned.

As he got to know the Department of Agriculture at meetings with municipal officials in Aledo and societies of the area, since last May 2011, several wells in the term of Aledo, have suffered a great decline in the level and the extraction flow that was being usual for such holdings, reducing the possibility of water extraction, in some cases up to half of normal levels for these wells.

In addition, the earthquake in May in the area of Lorca, is perhaps one of the fundamentals that caused this situation.

Remarkably, the epicenter of the earthquake took place between the towns of Aledo and Lorca, being the epicenter at a distance equal between these cities.

All this has led to the current campaign of table grapes, possible allocations of irrigation water have declined considerably to the point of not being sufficient water resources to take forward the harvest this year, mainly in some places.

These cases would involve unprecedented damage to numerous owners of Aledo and Totana, as the table grape crop is the main economic engine for many farm families in both municipalities.

For some months all Agricultural Transformation Societies of Aledo, whose partners include many of Totana, are immersed in the processing necessary to regularize the irrigated perimeters, and the allocation of water granted by the Hydrographic Confederation securely between different societies.

Notwithstanding this short term is not a solution to the serious situation ahead, since the amount of water currently being extracted well, predicts it will not be possible to take forward the harvest this year.

The City of Aledo and the Segura River Basin have been working on finding a solution to the situation through, and has made a study of the possible locations for a new well in case necessary, that would be valid both the area of "El Gallo" as to the irrigation area of "El Grillo" regardless of the replacement wells.

Also being studied another set of alternatives and possibilities with the CHS to try to get the water from different places and ways to the mountain area, on an emergency basis and temporarily to solve this serious problem.

In this situation is also caused damage and collapse in the tunnel on the left bank of the Tagus-Segura Postrasvase up to Ulea, which will affect the supply and distribution of the flows that are siphoning of the aqueduct to Tajo Totana area.

The motion will support the Irrigation Community Totana and Agricultural Transformation Societies Totana the possible reduction of the transfer tunnel to the break up to Ulea.

In this regard, it will urge the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment (MAGRAMA) to initiate and expedite the repair of the channel tunnel on the left bank of the Tajo-Segura, after collapsing by a landslide, and working in all measures possible to overcome the effects of partial disruption of water supply in the Segura River basin and parts of the provinces of Murcia and Alicante.
