The new Greenway Cartagena-Totana, which has promoted the Autonomous Community to strengthen its commitment to greenways as an axis to promote tourism inland and nature in the region, has accounted for more than 8,400 users only in the stretch of the totanero municipality since its inauguration last summer.

Municipal Government officials have recently met with the manager of the Consortium Vías Verdes of the Region of Murcia Juan Soria, and the head of the infrastructure service of the Institute of Tourism (ITREM), Juan Pedro Marín, to take stock of the use and functioning of has led to the opening of this infrastructure in what refers to the Totanero municipality.

The Ministry of Tourism last August the new tracings of the greenways of the Campo de Cartagena and Mazarrón, of 53 and 14 kilometers, which are added to the nearly 78 kilometers of the Greenway of the Northwest, between Murcia and Caravaca de the cross.

The old railroad was conditioned for senderista and cicloturista use and it is foreseen that in its first year it receives 60.000usuarios.

The total investment made for the refurbishment of the old railway Totana-Cartagena and its branch La Pinilla-Mazarrón was 1.34 million (the works have been co-financed with FEDER funds from the European Commission).

the soil has been conditioned with cement and polymer, after repair of the land;

12 rest areas have been created, three eco-consultants and the plantation of trees has been carried out with around 1,600 pines and carob trees.

In addition, the regional government works on the improvement of these infrastructures with measures such as the elaboration of an ordinance that regulates the use and operation of greenways, increasing protection against undue uses such as motorized traffic or other actions that damage them.

These routes, thanks to their accessibility, ease and safety, are frequented by families with children, seniors or people with disabilities, and must be specially supervised.
