The City of Totana commemorates the 450th anniversary of the consecration of the parish church of Santiago El Mayor (18/09/2017)

On Sunday, September 3, the regional press published an article of the Official Chronicle of Totana, Juan Cánovas Mulero that we reproduce on our website in order to contribute to the dissemination of this contribution related to a major historical event in our city

With the transfer of the Blessed Sacrament on July 24, 1567, Totana celebrated the consecration and dedication of the new parish church to the apostle Santiago, whose works had begun in 1549, following the trace of the maestro Quijano.

Keeping harmony in its structure, respecting a line of solidity and welcome, the construction will be completed during the following centuries.

Totana, with special sensitivity, has managed to generate around the sacred building a rich wealth, credited for the existence of artistic elements of impressive appreciation and for testimonies of self-denial, fraternity and hope.

In the spring of life that emanates from its walls rest, strength and certainty the anxieties of its neighbors, at the same time that the solidarity becomes commitment in the charity that is born to its impulse.

And is that the word of the Gospel is not only balm but also opening the heart to the needs of others.

These 450 years have meant the attainment of achievements which we now thank and enjoy but which we must continue to proclaim, from the joy and joy of the faith.

Thus, the very structure of the basilical plant temple offers the outstretched arms of Christ that embrace the aspirations of the human being.

The slenderness of its cruciform pillars, from the elegance of its nakedness, offer the humility of the God of surrender.

The greatness of the Mudejar coffered manor, the largest in Spain, with its symbolic expression of protection, recalls that the Church, in the safe nave of the Gospel, leads to the encounter with the Father.

The Baroque altarpiece, forged in 1672 by the gouge of Antonio Caro, with the vigor and impetus of the Solomonic column, shows the generous goodness of the God of mercy that rooted in the heart of the person, so that, like the Branches that run along the shaft of their pedestals, the fruit of love springs forth.

It completes the set with sculptures by Salzillo, Sánchez Araciel, Lozano Roca or José Hernández, works of eloquent vivacity that call for commitment and concord.

To celebrate this event activities of different nature have been carried out.

Conferences given since the establishment of the faith by Don Fernando Colomer and Don Francisco José Alegría;

a prayer meeting with music, voice and emotions directed by the singer-songwriter Carmela Martínez;

a pictorial homage by the local group Contrast;

different concerts of music of the Reformation and the Baroque in charge of the interpreters of the International Festival of Ancient Music of Sierra Espuña;

as well as the celebration of the Eucharist, presided over by the bishop of the diocese, Monsignor Lorca Planes.

To deepen the reality of this trajectory of fertility will be presented a publication on the historic and faith itinerary of the temple.

Encouraging this walk, his parish priest, Don Jose Ruiz Garcia, to whom we wish the best achievements in the new pastoral challenge he assumes.

Juan Cánovas Mulero.
