The mayor receives Dr. Totanera, Sandra González Montiel (22/07/2020)

| Sandra collaborates in a project that uses radiotherapy to treat patients with COVID-19 pneumonia | The mayor, Juan José Cánovas, has received the young doctor from Totanera, Sandra González Montiel, who is collaborating on a project that uses radiotherapy to treat patients with COVID-19 pneumonia, at the Sant Hospital Joan de Alicante, where he develops his professional practice. The first mayor already congratulated this health professional at the beginning of last May for being "a promoter and partner in the research and study of this treatment for patients with coronavirus by applying this procedure."Now, months later, the doctor has wanted to thank the first mayor for the congratulations and has met with him, along with members of his family, to let him know the details of the development of this clinical project. This technique, still in the process of study, can help coronavirus patients in whom the treatments that are being used to fight this disease have failed; whose hospital center has been the first in the Valencian Community to apply radiotherapy and the second in Spain.Radiation therapy for COVID-19 patients is the same treatment used for cancer patients but in very low doses.

The first patients have already been treated in a trial that plans to initially include ten people. Its application, which is a technique that was already developed in the 1930s when there were no such advanced antibiotic drugs for pneumonia patients, apparently contributes to reducing the inflammation of the lungs that some coronavirus patients suffer, which suddenly worsen at a week after the first symptoms started.Sandra González Montiel is a young resident doctor in the specialty of Oncology at the Hospital Universitari Sant Joan in Alicante; and studied at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Murcia, taking a fourth year at the Faculté Libre de Médecine in Lille (France).Professionals from the Pneumology, Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases services of the Alicante hospital center have been participating in the study, the results of which are expected to see the light in a few days in order to verify an effective response in patients who do not respond to pharmacological treatments.
