Totana requests aid from the state and regional governments to alleviate the economic consequences of the health crisis on the cut flower and ornamental plant sector (07/04/2020)

The mayor, Juan José Cánovas, has asked the central and regional governments for aid to the cut flower and ornamental plant sector in the municipality of Totana and the Guadalentín region, affected by the health crisis, has shown his firmer firm support totaneras companies in the sector, as well as flower growers.

Among seedbeds, nurseries, producers and traders, about a dozen companies and around a hundred direct and indirect jobs are affected.

In this sector, those affected in this municipality are the producers of cut flowers, ornamental flowers, nurseries and garden centers.

As for the cut flower, the truth is that not many families are affected because there are almost no plantations left in the municipality.

Cánovas has informed that we keep in permanent contact with some of the companies, which have lost all production from March onwards;

And they tell us that they have cold rooms full of flowers, that they will go to the garbage, to the detriment of both producers and marketers as well as collaborating farmers.

The losses are considerable given that all the orders they have lost have been canceled, having canceled the celebration of traditional festivals such as Easter, San José or the Bando de la Huerta de Murcia at the Murcia Spring Festival.

The Mayor's Office has asked both Administrations to listen to the sector and answer their queries and take extraordinary measures for flower growers;

and it has urged them to approve a law decree with measures such as reducing VAT to four percent, allowing five-year loans without interest or the full rebate of Social Security contributions for one year.

In addition, the mayor recalled that this is a very important sector for the social economy, given that the vast majority of productions are run by family units, which cannot receive any type of aid or ERTE and other economic losses are millions .

Farmers have seen their marketing points closed in a few weeks in which they usually sell more than 50% of the annual production, a circumstance that is aggravated by the suspension of numerous festivals typical of spring
