The CHS grants the concession of a 3.28 hm3 flow of the Ãguilas desalination plant, destined for irrigation and livestock to the Irrigation Community of the Tajo-Segura transfer With this measure, the historical demands of water use are resolved for (23/05/2019)

The Confederación Hidrográfica del Segura (CHS) today delivered the official notification of the concession of 3,280,000 cubic hectometres for irrigation and livestock to the Community of Irrigators of the Tajo-Segura de Totana transfer from the Águilas-Guadalentín desalination plant, of the total granted to municipalities of the Guadalentín Valley.

The president of the CHS, Mario Urrea, the mayor of Totana, Andrés García, accompanied by the Water Commissioner, Javier García Garay, and the head of basin planning, Jesús García, gave an account of the agreement before sending it to the directors of the Community of Irrigators of Totana in the course of a subsequent meeting.

The Ministry for the Ecological Transition already advanced this past March this decision that is now subscribed, through the CHS, with the different communities of irrigators of the Guadalentín Region, by granting a new flow of 3.28 cubic meters to the year assigned to the Águilas desalination plant.

With this measure, a solution is given to the historical claim of the consolidated irrigation in the cultivation territories of El Raiguero, El Paretón and La Huerta, as well as the livestock demands since 500,000 hm3 will be destined to this sector in the municipality.

Of the total of 10,764.59 gross hectares of surface area that the Totana Irrigation Community has, 6,975 correspond to the area that delimits the irrigable perimeter of the Tajo-Segura Transfer and the 3,789.59 remaining hectares refer to those already recognized as irrigated consolidated, in the totaneras deputations of El Raiguero, El Paretón and La Huerta.

In general, these resources of the desalination plant of Águilas will be destined to crops in the irrigable zones of the municipal areas of Totana, Mazarrón, Pulpí, Puerto Lumbreras, Alhama de Murcia, Lorca and Águilas, as well as to the consolidation of irrigation in Totana and Alhama

The users and the amounts granted are: Community of Irrigators of the Tajo-Segura de Totana transfer 3.28 hm3;

Community of Irrigators of Lorca, 2.4 hm3;

Community of Irrigators of Águilas, 1.5 hm3;

that of Alhama de Murcia, 1,160 hm3;

the Community of Irrigators of Puerto Lumbreras, 1 hm3 and that of Pulpí, 1.5 hm3.

Part of these new concessions of the Águilas desalination plant will serve to consolidate 4,156 gross hectares of irrigable land in the irrigation communities of Totana and Alhama de Murcia.

On the other hand, although almost all the resources granted are destined for irrigation, a maximum annual volume of 0.8 hm3 can be used to supply livestock farms.

The mayor of Totana showed his satisfaction with this decision, whose file has processed in recent months the Water Commissioner of the CHS after the visit to the municipality of Secretary of State Hugo Morán and the then government delegate Diego Conesa, is determined as new irrigable land the unconsolidated territory, which is, henceforth, attached to the desalinated waters of the IDAM with which this region will be supplied through the main driving Guadalentín Valley.

This new resource has a term of 25 years from when the concession is granted while the agreement between the beneficiaries and the water supplier is in force.

Andrés García thanked the sensitivity and work carried out by the Ministry for the Ecological Transition, the Government Delegation, the Segura Hydrographic Confederation and the Water Commissioner;

and he congratulated himself for the achievement of this achievement which ends "the suffering and uncertainty due to the legal insecurity of more than 900 Totana families with small farms and crops".

The president of the Confederation recalled that since 2011, when the first resources of the Águilas desalination plant were granted, "it is not until today that resources are once again granted".

Mario Urrea has reiterated the commitment of the Government of Spain in "guaranteeing resources to the Segura basin".

In addition, he emphasized that desalinated water is "a strategic good" for Spain and that the desalination capacity currently managed by the Government, through Acuamed and the Commonwealth of the Taibilla Channels, is 463 hm3 per year, with reach 700 hm3 in 2021, "which means double the capacity".

According to Mario Urrea, the "evident" proof is the real commitment of the Government of Spain to the Segura Basin, which will be soon established with new concessions.

The president of the CHS also announced various maintenance and maintenance activities in the municipality's boulevards amounting to 100,000 euros of the total, specifically the replacement of a breakwater in the Los Molinos and others that are studied in La Santa and Yéchar.

CHS has hired a total of 900,000 euros for the company Tragsa for actions in this area in the watercourses and channels of the hydraulic public domain of the Segura Basin, which in recent years had not been carried out due to lack of budgetary availability, Urrea said. .

In relation to the works of the Presa de Lebor, the president of the CHS reported that this infrastructure is currently entrusted to the Spanish State Water Company of the Mediterranean Basins, SA (ACUAMED), which is the competent body for its execution.
