Ganar Totana proposes that recognition be given to the important environmental work of Ricardo Codorniu (18/02/2019)

Totana, has so far no recognition of the figure of which he was director of the restoration and reforestation works of Sierra Espuña, the forest engineer Ricardo Codorniu

Recently, both the City Council of Totana, through a motion of Win Totana IU that was approved by the plenary session, as well as other institutions involved with our natural jewel, today cataloged as a Regional Park, we are waiting for the possibility of granting of the declaration of the territory of Sierra Espuña with the qualification of National Park.

In a historical context in which the environmental issue has come to the forefront due to multiple factors such as: scientific evidence on climate change, deforestation, the reduction of water sources, or the degradation of habitats;

the fact that Sierra Espuña achieved this declaration should be an achievement for the quality of life of the inhabitants of the bordering municipalities, as well as a possibility to diversify prospects of prosperity always within the framework of environmental sustainability.

We consider, therefore, that a municipality like Totana, which owes so much, both enjoys and has such a relationship with Sierra Espuña, has so far no recognition of the figure of which he was director of the restoration and reforestation work of this environment. At the end of the 19th century, the engineer of mountains Ricardo Codorniu and Stárico.

According to some sources Ricardo Codorniu, born in Cartagena in 1846, has gone down in history as the "Apostle of the tree", because in addition to this work he directed the repopulation of the pine forest of Guardamar del Segura.

His thinking is usually framed within the regenerationist movement that developed in Spain at the end of the 19th century.

His restless spirit led him to participate in the foundation of the Murcian Society of Esperanto in 1902. As an added fact, he was the maternal grandfather of another important engineer, Juan de la Cierva and Codorniu, (1895-1936), inventor of the autogyro.

For all these reasons, Ganar Totana raises to the full February, an initiative to make a recognition of the important environmental work of Ricardo Codorniu, giving his name to any square, street or significant building in our town.
